Mary’s Jams, Jellies and Honey

Mary is our newest trader at The Sidings and here’s her story:-

My childhood was spent in a small farming community in Mayo, in the West of Ireland where money was scarce.  We always made our own jams and preserves and I was complemented on my jam making by friends who had only had supermarket bought jam.  People felt my homemade jam was far better and they encouraged me to sell my jams at farmers markets.

In 2004 my partner John became a beekeeper and we acquired some land to keep his bee hives on, this also enabled us to grow soft fruits for jam making.  I started selling to family and friends and had our first stall at our local horticultural show.  This led on to a Stall at the Duckpond Market in Ruislip in 2008 and now we are looking forward to taking a pitch at The Sidings N21,Winchmore Hill.

Over the years I have devoted much of my time to creating a wide range of outstanding and delicious preserves, John has also developed his beekeeping and has a number of apiary sites and the honey that is on our market stall is from the nearest apiary to that particular market.  My preserves are mostly produced from our own seasonal soft fruit which is pollinated by our bees.  John and I also take advantage of local forage to gather crab apples, blackberries, quinces and medlars. We also source fruit from friends and family and local Markets.

You’ve now read the history of the produce, So this Sunday come along and check out Mary’s products for yourself.

Maria’s Tea Cakes

Maria’s menu has changed to suit the weather and Season.  She’ll now be stocking her amazing homemade mince pies.  Delicious sweet pastry with orange zest, encases her homemade rich mincemeat and then each one is topped with flaked and ground almonds.

There will also be a rich vegetarian casserole available to either take home or enjoy whilst at the market.  It’s packed full of flavour and features, butter beans, carrots, celery, onions, tomatoes and olive oil.  All the ingredients are cooked nice and slow so that all the flavours combine and create a delicious sauce.  Maria will be serving this alongside some fresh crusty bread or you could take it home and if you prefer something meaty, add some plump sausages and enjoy!

Ngozi’s Kitchen
